What kind of alcohol is sake?

Not a wine, a beer or a spirit, sake is a beverage category unto itself. A cherished pour in Japan for over 2500 years, sake is increasingly making its mark across the world, appearing on wine lists, bottle shelves, and in the cocktails of drinks professionals in-the-know.

Given its mastery of whisky, it's worth taking a closer look at the nation's traditional drink, sake, which had a 1,000-year head start on whisky. A fermented beverage with an average alcohol by volume (ABV) of 15% and usually no carbonation, sake is often referred to as rice wine.

Sake is a mildly sweet, clean tasting drink with a well-balanced combination of astringent and savory flavor. It has a nutty, fruity aroma which is less pronounced than that of wine.

Cold sake tastes like very dry white wine, but some others are more flavourful. The hot sake that you drink in winter is the one that tastes like vodka. This is because you can feel the alcohol going straight to your head. Some people also think sake has a familiar aroma and aftertaste that is reminiscent of sherry.

Furthermore, the Umami present in sake makes it a great match for western dishes as well as other Asian cuisine. Even though rice has a rather bland flavor, sake, particularly Ginjo-shu, has fruity flavors similar to apples, bananas, and various fruits.

The price of sake ranges from a few hundred yen (2-3 USD) to 20000-30000 yen (200 – 300 USD). BASICALLY, expensive sakes TEND to taste great, but that's not necessarily the case.

This sake is very affordable although the price does vary quite a bit by region from $7 to $30 a bottle and is available in most markets.

' Usually, sake is served in a special ceremony, where it is warmed in an earthenware or porcelain bottle. But you can drink sake chilled or at room temperature, too. During the ceremony, sake is sipped from a small porcelain cup.

The smaller the cup, the more often you can pour for them, thereby showing honor and reverence each time they drain their glass. This is the main reason traditional sake cups are so small, to allow for this ritual to take place as much as possible when drinking with friends.

Moonshine is high-proof liquor that is produced illegally. The name was derived from a tradition of creating the alcohol during the nighttime, thereby avoiding detection. In recent years commercial producers increasingly label some of their products as "moonshine".

Everclear is a 190 proof version of grain alcohol. It is a popular brand name for ethyl alcohol. It is 95 percent undiluted alcohol. Keep in mind that other liquor like rum, vodka, and gin typically have an alcohol content between 20 and 40 percent.
