Ping (latency is the technically more correct term) means the time it takes for a small data set to be transmitted from your device to a server on the Internet and back to your device again. The ping time is measured in milliseconds (ms).
Ping amounts of 100 ms and below are average for most broadband connections. In gaming, any amounts below a ping of 20 ms are considered exceptional and “low ping,” amounts between 50 ms and 100 ms range from very good to average, while a ping of 150 ms or more is less desirable and deemed “high ping.”
Lower ping is better than high ping, because low ping means less lag. And less lag means smoother gameplay. On the flip, high ping means a longer lag. It also means you probably have a poor internet connection speed.

Packet loss is commonly caused by network congestion, hardware issues, software bugs, and a number of other factors which we discuss in detail below. It sits in the trio of two other major network performance complications: latency, and jitter.
The most common cause of packet loss on a network is overloaded network devices. Switches and routers will drop data packets if they cannot process them in time. Other major packet loss causes include faulty equipment and cabling.
Business-side issues, like software bugs and old or outdated hardware, can cause this to happen. Fortunately, on-site IT can mitigate these problems or, ideally, prevent them entirely. But packet loss can also occur when an ISP's network is clogged during peak-use times and/or if the network itself is old or outdated.
