Taxonomy is the science of naming, describing and classifying organisms and includes all plants, animals and microorganisms of the world.
An example of taxonomy is the way living beings are divided up into Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species. An example of taxonomy is the Dewey Decimal system - the way libraries classify non-fiction books by division and subdivisions.
The purpose of taxonomy is to categorize organisms based on their common characteristics and descent. The main aim of taxonomy is to identify, characterise, classify and give specific names to all the living organisms according to their characteristics.
There are seven main taxonomic ranks: kingdom, phylum or division, class, order, family, genus, species.
Dogs are classified in the class Mammalia, so they are mammals. Besides mammals, remember that other classes of chordates include fish, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Dogs are further classified in the Carnivora order and the Canidae family.

Canis lupus familiaris
The scientific name for a German shepherd is Canis lupus familiaris. This breed is also known among British dog lovers as the Alsatian.
Sometimes, dogs may go between their owner's legs seeking comfort or safety. Some research has found that medium and large dogs are more likely to demonstrate this behavior than small dogs. A lack of confidence, anxiety, or excitement can cause dogs to seek the closeness or protection of their owner's legs.
Health problems. The GSD is not a dog for those who just want to plunk down cash for the first puppy they see and head home (in fact, you should never do this with any puppy, for a number of reasons). German Shepherds, like any large breed, are prone to canine hip dysplasia, a crippling and potentially fatal disease.
The real fact is that there is no difference between the two. The only difference is that they were called by different names in different countries. An Alsatian breed was so called after the Alsace-Lorraine region bordering France and German. The German Shepard gets its name from Germany.
So, they created a new name for the German Shepherd, which was the Alsatian. The name Alsatian comes from the German French border area of Alsace-Lorraine; however, the original name of the dog is German Shepherd dog. These two names have caused confusion over the years as some people think it's a different dog breed.
The rarest color of German Shepherd is the isabella due to the recessive combination of liver and blue. You will have to search for a long time to get such a puppy – and his price will likely be high as well!
The Blue German Shepherd is a loyal and loving dog that will make an excellent member of the family. With a unique gene that gives them a gorgeous blue coat, these pups have the exact same fantastic temperament as their GSD brothers and sisters and make an excellent working dog as well as a guard dog.
Pure Breeds. The term silver German Shepherd surely sounds beautiful and exotic. Silver is quite a rare color in the German Shepherd color group. But, the color, silver, describes not only one color, but a wide range of color shades in different dogs. In most cases, silver in dogs comes as a metallic sheen.
The Black German Shepherd is a pure German Shepherd and doesn't qualify as a separate breed, but it stands out because of its color 100% black. The Black German Shepherds are very rare, and for that reason, their price is much higher, you can expect to find a Black Shepherd puppy around $700 to $2000.
You can expect to pay anywhere from $800 to $2,000 for a high-quality, completely black puppy. This is significantly more expensive than the $500 to $1,500 you can expect to pay for a usual German Shepherd. However, this is still much cheaper than you might expect for a large dog.
