33 sports
The 2020 Summer Olympics included 33 sports; the 2022 Winter Olympics included seven sports. Each Olympic sport is represented by an international governing body, namely an International Federation (IF). The International Olympic Committee (IOC) establishes a hierarchy of sports, disciplines, and events.
Since the first modern Games in 1896, 10 sports have disappeared completely from the Olympic schedule. These are croquet, cricket, Jeu de Paume, pelota, polo, roque, rackets, tug-of-war, lacrosse, and motor boating.
Nordic combined – a winter sport that combines ski jumping and cross-country skiing – is contested only by men at the Olympics, while two summer sports – artistic swimming and rhythmic gymnastics – feature only women's events.
five rings
The five rings symbolized the “five parts of the world” in which the Olympic movement was active, according to Coubertin. Contrary to popular belief, however, the colours of the rings are not associated with specific continents.
Based on a design first created by Pierre de Coubertin, the Olympic rings remain a global representation of the Olympic Movement and its activity. These five rings represent the five parts of the world now won over to the cause of olympism and ready to accept its fecund rivalries.
The five continents referred to are Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe and Oceana. The ring colors on the white background represent the nations of the world.
