The Amazon
The Amazon has a vast jungle basin, breathtaking waterfalls, and the world's largest river dolphins, but it might be more remarkable for something it doesn't have: a single bridge. That's right, the Amazon is the world's longest river not crossed by any bridges.
A river's color depends on the land it runs through. The Amazon river carries a lot of sediment (particles of mud and sand), which gives the water a muddy-brown color. Its largest tributary (branch), the Rio Negro, or black river, is filled with chemicals washed out of soil and plants, making the water very dark.
There are guided tours on the Amazon to see things like the Amazon River Dolphin, some of which apparently will let people swim with them. Based on this, it's probably safe to swim in those areas, but like any river with wild-life there are no guarantees.
The Amazon River is located in the northern portion of South America, flowing from west to east. The river system originates in the Andes Mountains of Peru and travels through Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, and Brazil before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean.
