The Unique Entity Identifier, or the UEI, is the official name of the “new, non-proprietary identifier” that will replace the D-U-N-S® number, according to the General Services Administration (GSA). The UEI will be requested in, and assigned by, the System for Award Management (SAM.gov).
The UEI will identify the unique entity registered in SAM, like the DUNS number does today. There can be a many-to-one relationship (UEI to EIN), as there is today with multiple locations of an entity each assigned a DUNS number and sharing the same EIN.
Government Transition from DUNS Number to New Unique Entity Identifier Will Occur on April 4, 2022. By April of 2022, the federal government will stop using the DUNS number to uniquely identify entities.
