LTE, sometimes known as 4G LTE, is a type of 4G technology. Short for "Long Term Evolution", it's slower than "true" 4G, but significantly faster than 3G, which originally had data rates measured in kilobits per second, rather than megabits per second.

LTE stands for Long Term Evolution. It's a term used for the particular type of 4G that delivers the fastest mobile Internet experience. You'll usually see it called 4G LTE. Using a 4G smartphone on Verizon's 4G LTE network means you can download files from the Internet up to 10 times faster than with 3G.

Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options. If you see this screen, your device has 5G activated. If you don't see this screen, contact your carrier to confirm that your plan supports 5G.
The bottom line is that right now you probably won't need a new SIM card. Once standalone 5G has been achieved some time in the future, you may need one if you're still using your current SIM card at that time.
5G is the fifth generation of cellular networks, and it is expected to be one of the fastest wireless technologies ever created. (This is not to be confused with the 5G that you may see on your Wi-Fi router, which is referring to 5 GHz frequency for your internet network.)
In laymans terms, the difference between 4G and LTE is that 4G is faster than LTE. The reason for this is that 4G meets the technical standards designated for it whereas LTE data transfer speed standard is merely a stopgap measure standard devised until actual 4G speed is realized.
First, swipe up on the home screen, tap on the Settings icon, and tap on the Network & Internet selection. You should then tap on the Mobile Network menu and then tap on the Advanced option. Finally, tap on the LTE selection for 4G access.
Both LTE and HSPA+ are defined by the ITU as "4G" networks. The decision to display "4G" and "LTE" on phones (not just the iPhone) is largely a marketing decision. LTE is 4G. 4G is not necessarily LTE.
In the USA, if it says 3G, it is HSPA, if it says 4G, it's HSPA+. If it says LTE, then you are actually using LTE.
If it is turned on, the mobile accesses WiFi and cellular data together to make it quicker to switch networks. It's possible to use the two connections simultaneously.
LTE-A is a more robust version. They still don't reach true 4G speeds. It is possible to get closer to the 4G standards with newer technology, but most of the time, you are probably not going to see a huge difference. The LTE network needs to be upgraded to handle higher 4G speeds as well.
If it is showing LTE - then that means Cellular data is enabled. So, even if Wi-Fi is enabled along with Cellular, then Cellular is what will always be used. It will flip to Wi-Fi if and when Cellular is lost. This is because Cellular always overrules Wi-Fi.

It is a good choice when Wi-Fi does not provide the connectivity required in certain use cases such as supporting mobile deployments.
