How to convert HEIC to JPG or PNG using Preview
Nov 17, 2021
HEIC is the file format name Apple has chosen for the new HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) Standard. Using advanced and modern compression methods, it allows photos to be created in smaller file sizes while retaining a higher image quality compared to JPEG/JPG.
When it comes to both compression and image quality, HEIC files win out over JPEG. The HEIC format can actually enhance the quality of photos with transparency and a broader dynamic range capabilities.
HEIC files are the default format for images across your Apple devices, so it should be easy to open them on your Mac. Just right-click on the file and select Open with Preview – the file should then launch in the Preview program. Alternatively, you can import the files to your Photos app or upload them to Dropbox.
Apple's iPhone and iPad take photos in the HEIF image format by default. These photos have the HEIC file extension. Windows 10 or Windows 11 can view HEIC files in just a few clicks—or you can convert them to standard JPEGs and view them anywhere.
If you search the Store for HEVC, you'll see the $0.99 HEVC Video Extensions package. This fee likely reflects the cost of licensing the codecs for Microsoft.

If you want to save iPhone photos as JPEG, you can go to the Settings app to change your camera settings.
Click the “File” menu and then click the “Save As” command. In the Save As window, choose the JPG format on the “Save As Type” drop-down menu and then click the “Save” button.
There are actually no differences between the JPG and JPEG formats. The only difference is the number of characters used. JPG only exists because in earlier versions of Windows (MS-DOS 8.3 and FAT-16 file systems) they required a three letter extension for the file names.

All new photos and videos will now use JPEG or H. 264 format. To return to using the space-saving HEIF and HEVC formats, choose High Efficiency.
Since iOS 11, your best iPhone has, by default, captured images in a format called HEIC (also known as HEIF) and HEVC for video. It's a more efficient format than the old default, JPEG, because it saves storage space with smaller file sizes, even though the quality of images is nearly identical.
With the “Most Compatible” setting enabled, all iPhone images will be captured as JPEG files, stored as JPEG files, and copied as JPEG image files too. This can help for sending and sharing pictures, and using JPEG as the image format for iPhone camera was the default since the first iPhone anyway.
There are several apps that support HEIC and let you convert them to JPG, but the simplest is the Preview app.

Click on the HEIC image in Google Photos to preview it. Now right-click on it and select “Save image as” option from the menu. Select the save location on your PC and the image will be saved in JPG format.
Adobe Lightroom is the best way to open a HEIC file and edit it. You can also use any image viewer to open this file format.
