Cast & Crew
Centered on the fraught relationship between a cold-blooded angel investor who swoops in to save a revolutionary medical technology company run by an optimistic ingenue, What/If examines the consequences of making a deal with the devil.
So, what happens during Sean and Anne's night together? Well, nothing actually. They do not have sex. The experiment was not designed for Anne to sleep with a younger man, it was designed to create trust issues between Lisa and Sean so that they would eventually break up.
Naturally, Lisa suspects that Anne and Sean slept together, but all we see in flashbacks is Sean punching glass and Anne praising him for his "animal aggression." And in Episode 7, Anne confirms to Lisa that she didn't sleep with her husband that night.
Ann Montgomery (Renee Zellweger) finally revealed her true plans for Lisa and Sean, and boy, was it a doozy – she was planning to sink Lisa in order to teach her a lesson in resilience. After all, that's what mother's do. Yup – you got that right, Ann is Lisa's biological mother.
Sean (Blake Jenner), after coming clean about murdering his ex-girlfriend's would-be rapist nearly a decade prior, goes to prison for 20 months, and gets out in time to meet Lisa (Jane Levy) by their bench.
Seven years later and because of Anne's lifelong surveillance of Lisa, she also found out about Sean's murder. Anne used the crime to manipulate Sean, eventually creating an overwhelming sense of guilt in him. By the What/If series finale, Sean turned himself into the police for the murder of the drug dealer.
When Anne was younger, she was raped by her building super — a man she trusted who then took advantage of her. When Anne's mom found out she was pregnant, she kicked Anne out, so she gave Lisa up for adoption in exchange for money, seeing it as her ticket to make something of herself.
Anne Montgomery is one of the main characters in What/If. She is portrayed by Renée Zellweger.
In addition, Anne's long-time protector, Foster (Louis Herthum), also seeks redemption. Both men understand what needs to be done. So, Foster provides Sean with access to Anne's private ledgers. This moment sets up narrative resolution for both characters in the What/If season 1 finale.
2. Sean and Lisa: Go or No-Go? Also, did they ever get divorced? After everything that happened, Lisa told Sean, “There isn't anything left in my heart to forgive you with Sean.
Marvel Studios' strangest experiment so far has come to an end. The What If...? Season 1 finale, titled “The Watcher Broke His Oath,” tied together its eight previous episodes to provide some much-needed closure while also setting up future events in a possible Season 2 and the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe.
However, she was seen alive, enjoying life in the sun away from San Francisco. It is believed that Anne killed herself by setting her childhood apartment on fire. Her stocks and Emigen's value were moving towards zero and Liam Strom's men were after her. The role of Liam Strom is played by Julian Sands.
He claims that he made her what she is. He gave her money, connections, and a purpose. He seems to be the only one that can get under her skin. Montgomery was an intern at a London bank when Liam found her and made her an offer she couldn't refuse, much like she made to Sean and Lisa.
